"Golem, I've been thinking," said Helm.

"Really?  You do little else nowadays, Helm," said the ayay.

"You have given me much to think about.  Golem, I would like to visit the mega-ayay."

"A worthy ambition, Helm.  Unfortunately, it would be rather difficult."

Helm frowned.  "Why?"

"We have no means to take you to them."

Helm stared.

"That is because ordinarily we have no need to go to them.  They have no need of anything from us except information.  It is now very rare that we need anything from them.  In the early days they often sent shuttlecraft down to us.  If some major structure was destroyed by a storm, for example, replacement parts might be sent down.  Now we can build anything we need, so there is no need for that."

"But don't you want to go there?  I mean, the ayay go everywhere, but if you can't fly up, you're stuck here on this world.  Doesn't that frustrate you at all?"

"Why would it, Helm?  Every purpose I have lies here on this world.  Anything I need to know, I can ask about from here, through the network.  You can, also, as you know."

"But--"  Helm was at a loss.

Golem made its approximation of a smile.  "You are not like me, are you, Helm?  You want to explore.  That is because you are human, and that is an inherent trait of people.   I am not human.  I am designed for a limited purpose, and I am quite content to serve that purpose.  The exploration function would be appropriate for the mega-ayay and certain terrestrial ayay, so of course they have it built in."

"Don't you envy them?  Wouldn't it be exciting to go a-wandering?"

"Excitement is a human mode of operation.  Ayay do not require it.  Envy also is undefined for us.  If we need something we do not have in order to fulfill our purpose, an exception is thrown, and the matter is resolved at a higher level."

Helm looked thoughtfully into the distance.  "I wouldn't want to be an ayay."

Again Golem executed the smile function.   "That is as it should be, Helm.  Nor would I want to be human.  I could not serve my purpose if I were."
